TRY OUT LOCAL PRODUCE
If your food could talk, it would tell quite a tale. A great deal of grocery store produce travels nearly thousands of miles before it ends up on your plate. As those veggies travel, the vehicles carrying them release fossil fuels, resulting in high degrees of pollution and – in many instances – beat up produce. Buying from local farmers means you're not only getting the freshest food possible, but you're saving energy and keeping the air cleaner.
Shop Local: To find farmers nationwide, visit localharvest.org, sustainabletable.org, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture at http://search.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets/
LET YOUR GRASS GROW
What! We shouldn’t cut our grass each week? Research tells us that spending less time tending to your lawn can actually make it greener. Most grass species do best when they're kept at least 2 1/2 inches tall. The length creates more surface area to absorb sunlight, which creates thicker turf and deeper roots.
Save Some Extra $$: If you let grass clippings hang out on your lawn, they’ll add nitrogen to the soil and discourage weeds. You'll not only need less fertilizer and herbicide; leaving clippings on your lawn means less in landfills. Why is this important? In 2012, Americans generated about 251 million tons of waste – 13.5% of which included yard trimmings like your lawn clippings.
STOP THAT PAPER
Did you know that if every household stopped their paper bank statements, the money saved could send over 17,000 high school graduates to public university for a year? VISIT A CAR WASH
Who knew that visiting a car wash could be better for the earth? Professional car washes often use water more efficiently to wash your car. In fact, in everyone in the U.S. visited a car wash just one time instead of washing it themselves, Americans would save nearly 8.7 billion gallons of water.
DON'T DRIVE LIKE A JERK
FuelEconomy.gov found that not speeding, slamming the on gas and braking like a maniac could improve your gas mileage by up to 33 percent. You can also save up to a dime a gallon by just properly inflating your tires.
