Cocoa butter vs. shea butter: is there really any difference? In the natural and organic marketplace, these two ingredients often seem interchangeable. However, while both butters can be beneficial to your skin, that doesn’t mean they always serve the same purpose.

Scent

While cocoa butter is pleasantly reminiscent of chocolate or coconuts, the scent of shea butter is much less attractive. Both shea butter & cocoa butter are rich & moisturizing; however, shea butter is a good source of vitamins A and E (which can reduce inflammation and repair damaged skin), while cocoa butter contains cocoa mass polyphenol (CMP), which eases dermatitis and/or rashes. CMP may also inhibit the growth of cancerous cells and tumors, which makes this particularly beneficial for cancer survivors or those with a history of cancer in their family.

Acne

If you suffer from acne prone skin, then shea butter is a better choice for you. Cocoa butter can clog the pores, leading to more breakouts.
